Vernon Central
SEPTEMBER 2008
High winds the evening of September 14th caused trees to fall, electric to fail and
put the county's fire departments on the roads and in their stations for many hours.
Winds to 60 mph put trees down all across Vernon Township with the biggest
concentration being between US Hwy 322 and Harmonsburg Rd. Multiple units
responded to numerous calls simultaneously and the department was still able to
remain available for more serious emergencies. Vernon Township VFD was also
asked to assist Vernon Central with additional calls in the northern part of its
response area. Along with trees, wires were also brought down causing a
widespread power outage in central Vernon Township for nearly seven hours. Fire
crews worked through the night to make sure roads were passable for motorists.
The weather was also responsible for a few minor accidents in which no injuries
were reported. In the end, Vernon Central responded to 21 incidents during the
storm. All personnel returned to service without incident.
