| STORM SAFETY * Go to your cellar or basement and crouch down facing the wall with your head to your knees. * If you have no cellar or basement, take shelter in the smallest room in the center of the house on the lowest floor. Wrap yourself in a blanket or mattress, protecting your face and eyes. If a center room is not available, use a small room on an east wall. * If you live in a mobile or manufactured home, leave immediately and seek out a community shelter. * Don't use your vehicle to escape an approaching severe storm or tornado. Cars and trucks can be fatal shelters. * If you are in an office or factory, follow pre-plans or move to an interior hallway on the lowest level and crouch to the floor, protecting your face and eyes. Centrally located stairwells are good shelter. Don't take shelter in halls that open to the south or west. * If caught outside during severe weather, lie in a ditch or depression, face down with arms covering your head, and wait until the storm has passed. * Always keep a flashlight and battery operated radio handy to keep informed of threatening weather conditions. * When a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning is issued, absolutely stay away from large free span buildings, such as: shopping centers, auditoriums, etc. Stay away from south and west facing walls, as most storms move from southwest to northeast. When alerted, ACT FAST! Don't waste time. And have a plan of action ready before the storm hits! REMEMBER! LOWEST LEVEL, SMALLEST ROOM, CENTER PART |
